Welcome to the homepage of the artist Gustav Hessing!

Gustav Hessing is one of the most fascinating Austrian artists from the 20th century, who has received too little attention by now.

Hessing moved to Vienna in the 1930s to study art. His early works with strong colours from the Interwar Period correspond with the Austrian Expressionism, he admired Richard Gerstl and Edvard Munch. The Second World War was very hard for him, he lost his mother and other family members. In that time he made ony a few but very strong and dark watercolours, which are among his main works. During the World War a lot of his works were destroyed, one of the few preserved paintings is the naked personification of the night. From 1948 on Hessing started to paint some kind of concrete abstract compositions, which resulted in a geometric sign system later on. From the 1950s on he was influenced by Surrealism and Cubism. In the circuit of fantastic artists like Edgar Jené Hessing concentrated on dark and mystic works with a surrealistic impact.
